A wise friend in insurance
We have separated information on caravan insurance into 5 areas, general caravan insurance, tourer caravan insurance, static caravan insurance, folding camper insurance and motorhome insurance.
Here we answer questions on why touring caravan insurance is more expensive than static caravan insurance, where to find cover for a tourer based in Northern Ireland, or a static sited there and other general issues.
Tourer caravans face two main risks and many more minor ones. The major risks are theft and accidental damage. In 2007 extreme floods caught some people by surprise and some touring caravans were flooded in storage.
Because static caravans are not and cannot be towed on the road they have a low risk of theft of the caravan. The main risks facing static caravans are, storm, flood and fire.
Folding campers and trailer tents are often covered on touring caravan insurance policies as they face may of the same risks as a touring caravan and awning.
Specialist motorhome insurance policies offer extended overseas cover and cover the additional equipment that you may carry. Be careful not to buy a van policy which may be cheap but which only covers the base vehicle.

Don't leave reading the small print until you need to make a claim. If you do it may be too late if you find that you have not complied with a specific requirement of the policy......................![]()
* Shop around for the best policy for your needs.
* If you have a touring caravan that you leave permanently sited don't assume that it can be covered on a "static caravan insurance" policy. Even though it is sited it is much easier to steal than a large purpose built static caravan.
* If you are tempted to buy a monthly policy check how many months other are in a year. We know of one company that thinks there are 13 "lunar" months and you could end up paying more than you anticipate.
* Check what the security requirements are on your policy and ensure that you comply with them. If you don't the insurance company may not pay out if your caravan is stolen or broken into.
