Folding campers share many of the same risks as touring caravans. They are towed and therefore carry the risk of accidental damage, they are easily stolen and are subject to storm damage in the same way as a tourer's awning is at risk. They may therefore, with minor additional exclusions, be covered on a touring caravan insurance policy.
All folding camper insurance policies will require that you use a hitch lock and/or wheel clamp when detached from the towing vehicle and left unattended. Read the small print and make sure that you comply with the requirements.
Some policies exclude personal effects and valuables because many folding campers and trailer tents have limited integral physical security. These things may already be covered on your household contents policy as "personal positions away from the home". If you do not have this cover then you need to ask your home contents insurer if you can add the cover or consider changing to a policy that does provide the cover that you need.
Your trailer tent insurance policy will usually cover the equipment and camping items that you have with it. Your battery, gas bottles, roller water, crockery bedding etc should all be covered. You need to include the value of these things in your sums insured.
Many folding camper and trailer tent owners go to Europe for their main holiday. A folding camper is more manoeuvrable than a caravan and because of their smaller size may be less expensive on Ferries and the Channel tunnel. They are very well suited to the climate of southern Europe and many can be seen on camp sites in Spain and the South of France. In general a folding camper insurance policy will provide the same cover in other EU countries as it does in the UK for a period of time that far exceeds the length of time that you are able to be away. Some offer 60 or 90 days, some much longer. Since you will probably never use this time don't think that a bigger number equals better cover. What you want to look for is sufficient time and what would happen if your camper was damaged abroad. Some trailer tent insurance policies will pay for the cost of repatriation if your trailer is damaged and you are unable to tow it home as a result. This is valuable cover as it provides you with the peace of mind that you will not be stuck with a hefty bill should the unfortunate happen.

Don't leave reading the small print until you need to make a claim. If you do it may be too late if you find that you have not complied with a specific requirement of the policy......................![]()
* Wear and tear vermin and mildew damage will probably be excluded from your folding camper insurance policy so make sure that you take steps to minimise these risks.
* Check what security measures are required.
